The popular Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival’s Oyster Cooking Competition was replaced by Pick n Pay Flavours of Knysna this year.
Instead of restaurants preparing a special oyster dish as was the norm with the Oyster Cooking Competition, restaurateurs in and around Knysna showcased their signature dishes which guests, on presentation of a voucher, could sample, while Pick n Pay offered a variety of entrées, starters, a main course and of course deserts.
Naturally, among the fare on offer was Knysna’s favourite delicacy, the oyster, which was consumed with great gusto.
Expresso presenter Liezel van der Westhuizen joined by rugby stars, Toks van der Linde and Breyton Paulse as well as Malcolm Mycroft, Pick n Pay general manager: Marketing, and Marcus Farbinger, renowned Austrian professional artisan baker and owner of Ile de Pain, were tasked with judging a variety of gastronomic categories.
Die Gieter Deli and Restaurant, Knysna, won R2 000 as the best dressed stall of the evening. Loud cheers erupted as Knysna’s own Mawande Kondlo of Wandu @ Ekasi was announced as winner in the category for best casual eatery, taking R5 000 home with him.
The fine dining category as well as R5 000 was won by Oudtshoorn’s Su Casa Restaurant.
